Extraordinary General Meeting - 11th May 2010

The Friends of Riverside Park will be holding an extraordinary general meeting on Tuesday 11th May at 8.00 p.m. at the Bitterne Park Baptist Church Hall, 49 Oak Tree Road, SO18 1PH.

This meeting is part of the consultation process for our lottery bid for the renovation of the Woodmill Play Area. We will be displaying detailed plans of the improvements which we are proposing for this area. The plans have already been on display at the recent Riverside Eggspress event and also at our AGM in February.

The meeting is open to the wider community as well as to our own membership.

We look forward to seeing you there.

Cobden Meadows Play Area & New Grant News

Work has now started on the Cobden Meadows play area. This was due to be completed by the end of March, but due to the inclement weather this has been delayed by a few weeks.

In addition to the work above FORP have applied for a grant of £50,000 to refurbish the existing play area at Woodmill. We are delighted that we have been successful in stage one of the application.

Stage two involves consultations with the community. We have now received a proposal for the play area, but really need your feedback to ensure we as a community end up with a play area which encompasses all that we believe it should.

The plans, available on the link below, include a page on which you can record your views. Please take the time to complete this page and return it to theforp@gmail.com, your feedback will be an important factor in securing the grant funds for the build.

Cobden Meadows Play Area Proposals

Thanks to Mike Allott from Groundwork Solent for attending the 'Dirty Weekend' event in the park on the 7th June 2009. Whilst the planting was taking place Mike was on hand to present the proposed plans for the children's play area.

And a big 'thank you' to all those who helped out during our shrub and seed planting event. The weather held out for us, everyone mucked in and had fun. Hopefully we will be able to repeat this in the future.

green flag awarded to Friends of Riverside Park

Breathing Spaces Event, Sunday 8th June 2008

This was an action-filled day with lots of hands on activities, drumming workshops, children's farm, storytelling and folk art, Hampshire Wildlife Trust, 'do one thing for nature', woodcraft and lots more. The Friends of Riverside Park had a stand offering cold drinks, crisps, home-made cakes as well as badge-making and colouring activities for the children. We were also able to recruit quite a number of new members on the day.

Elsewhere in the park the mini railway was a popular attraction as always and all-in all it was an ideal family event for Riverside Park offering a wide variety of fun and educational activities for children of all ages. We hope that it will return next year.

Riverside Park Green Flag Judgement Day, Thursday 22nd May 2008

As many of you may have noticed there has been a great deal of activity in Riverside Park over the past few weeks including the installation of new seats, signs and much general tidying up (including a litter pick by a small group of "Friends").

This is in advance of the judgement for the Green Flag award which will take place next Thursday 22nd May.

It would be very helpful if any members are free to spend some time in the park during the late morning on Thursday in order to check for any last minute litter which could be picked up (the council will be putting in a big effort in the days prior to the judges arriving).

We hope that the park will be awarded the Green Flag as this will provide an incentive to keep the park maintained to the highest possible standard in order to retain the award in the coming years. If we are not awarded the Green Flag then we live to fight another day and to enjoy the improvements which have already been made.

Friends of Riverside Park Launch Event at the Riverside Eggspress

The Riverside Eggspress took place at Cobden Meadows on Saturday 22nd March 2008.

Organised by Southampton City Council this was the perfect opportunity for F.O.R.P. to be involved in their first event.

Despite the cold and very windy weather a steady stream of people turned up to enjoy the events which included a mini farm, bungee run, face painting, egg making and story telling and of course the famous Riverside railway was open to offer free rides and was a big success as always. The Friends of Riverside Park stall was very busy signing new members and was a great opportunity to meet and talk about the future goals of the Group as well as general matters concerning the park. Free badge making was also popular featuring the new F.O.R.P. swan logo designed by 16 year old Lucy from Townhill Park.

Thanks to all of you for your suggestions received throughout the day, which have been collated and passed onto the Council. Also a huge thank you to everybody for braving the unusual spring weather conditions.

Thanks to Southampton City Council for what turned out to be a successful and fun day out in the community.

We look forward to next year's Riverside Eggspress and hopefully warmer weather.

Finally a huge thank you to all our new members, and for your support.
